BYROM, Arthur Leslie

Arthur Leslie Byrom was born in 1899, baptised the 19th of March, to Herbert Byrom and Amy Hurst. He was born in Farnworth and baptised in St Michael’s Church, Great Lever, Bolton. Herbert, and many in his family, worked in the cotton manufacturing industry while Amy’s father was a farmer and the family lived on Harper Green Farm in Newbury, on the outskirts of Bolton.

Herbert, Amy and Arthur were living with her widowed mother, Alice Hurst, on the farm in 1901 along with three of Amy’s sisters, all working in the cotton industry while her brother was a Farmer’s Son. Herbert’s occupation was given as ‘Overlooker in Cotton Mill Looms’. In 1911 only Herbert, Amy and Arthur were on the farm with Alice Hurst. In 1917 another son, Charles Cyril was born to Herbert and Amy.

Arthur Leslie enlisted at Bury in the King’s (Liverpool Regiment), possibly as late as 1918 when he was aged nineteen. In October 1918 he was in the 3rd Reserve Battalion which was in Cork and Youghal from 1917. He was presumably returning to England on leave when he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October 1918. He did not survive the sinking.

His body was recovered on the shore in South West Scotland and was returned to his family and buried in St Michael’s Church, Great Lever, where he had been baptised. His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour in Farnworth Grammar School in Bolton.
